The patriarchy has crossed her line.

Inspired by actual events, War Bride of Mormon County is the tale of an underdog, outsider mother fighting to save her daughter, and ultimately herself, from an abusive patriarchy and community where alternate facts are a way of life.

When Trudy Thompson’s daughter reveals an explosive secret: her grandfather—a vaunted Mormon elder—is sexually abusing her, Trudy’s wrath is unleashed. But confronting an entrenched culture as an outsider—a Mancunian and Mormon convert who immigrated to rural Utah—will test Trudy to the core as she challenges a family where facts are twisted, relationships are tested, and dreams of a Heavenly future are dragged through a living Hell.

War Bride of Mormon County is the mother’s tale, exemplifying how a woman can rise even against stacked odds to protect what is most important to her. It is a tale of empowerment.

It’s a gripping, powerful new drama that will appeal to audiences similar to Doubt, How I Learned to Drive, and The Handmaid’s Tale.

Moving Forward

  • WHAT'S GOING ON RIGHT NOW?

WAR BRIDE OF MORMON COUNTY is in late-stage development, having been through extensive dramaturgy and four high-level readings, including a Spring 2024 staged reading by Hart Theater is Salt Lake City, preparatory for its 2025 premiere at Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester, England.

Funding, team-building, and community engagement are now underway in Manchester, moving to a final equity-level workshop and staged reading to polish the script and build additional visibility for the eventual fully realized production.

    Current tasks include:

    1. Fund-raise: It is determined that both phases of this project (reading and full production) will require a budget of apx. £100,000 (

    2. $60,000 through tax-deductible donations via a fiscal sponsor (a non-profit that will allow me to raise funds in this manner).

Assemble a team. This will include a director, co-producers, marketing, and others as needed.

Early audience development. Beginning to connect with groups via social media and word of mouth. These may include former Mormons, abuse survivors, and people curious about Mormon culture.

Book a theatre space. I am currently considering appropriate theatres San Diego and Los Angeles.

    3. UK production planning. Several UK producers and artistic directors are reviewing the script, with consideration of a UK premiere or possibly world premiere. This is appropriate as the story’s protagonist is from Manchester, England, making it a very compelling idea for theatres there and elsewhere in the UK.
Raise additional funds to assist with co-producing the UK production.

  • HOW CAN I GET INVOLVED?

Introduce the play to a Tony-winning producer who’s ready to put it on Broadway now! Okay okay…realistically, you can:

    • Recommend a highly-respected and connected San Diego area director.

    • Connect me with producers and artistic directors in the UK.

    • Help financially. Help me bring this riveting story to life both in the reading and fully-realized production. Contact me for more info on what this might look like. It is early in the process, but initial estimate is it will require apx. $30K to mount a professional-quality run in San Diego.

    • Introduce me to people who would love to be a part of bringing this incredible story to life, either financially or in-kind.

    • Plan to attend the San Diego reading.

    • Read the script. Ask me for a copy.

    • Are you connected to a name/star who would love to sink their teeth into some seriously meaty work? Introduce me.

  • WHO ARE YOU?

Thanks for asking. I’m Randall Huskinson, the playwright, and I will likely self-produce the initial run in San Diego. I had a long career in journalism and copywriting, and have now turned my pen to writing for the stage.

My solo show, Out of the Mormon Closet, was a triple award-winner in the 2022 Marsh Int’l Solo Festival.
